Details

CET Govora, the coal-fired power plant and district heating operator in Râmnicu Vâlcea, ceased coal production and closed the Alunu and Berbești lignite mines on August 31, 2026, as required by PNRR commitments and EU decarbonization targets. Approximately 400 employees in the mining division were affected: ~260 are expected to retire, while the remaining ~140 are being assisted by Vâlcea County Council to find reemployment on the local industrial platform. CET Govora retains its district heating distribution and transport license until March 2027. The physical mine closure process is expected to take 3-4 years. The closure is part of a national plan to eliminate 710 MW of coal-based energy capacity.
