The Romanian public administration is undergoing a major reorganization targeting the elimination of over 45,000 posts by July 1, 2026, as part of budget consolidation and efficiency measures. The most affected entities are primăriile (city halls), consiliile județene (county councils), and poliția locală (local police). As of early 2026, approximately 1.28 million posts were occupied in public institutions. The reform has been contested at the Constitutional Court by the Avocatul Poporului (People's Advocate), leading to temporary suspension in some counties. The education sector also lost ~15,000 posts in the past year, exceeding the combined reductions from all local public administration entities.
