Liberty Galați, Romania's largest integrated steel producer, has ~3,000 employees on technical unemployment since September 2025 due to financial crisis and insolvency proceedings. The company accumulated debts of ~3.4 billion lei. In May 2026, rolling mills were restarted in a tolling (rental) regime. On June 30, 2026, the company announced a 'reduced work week' (Săptămână Redusă de Lucru) of one unpaid day per week starting July 7, 2026, due to doubled electricity tariffs and weak market demand. The company is in concordat preventiv (preventive concordat) since March 2025 with ~1 billion EUR in total debts. Two asset sale auctions (March 2026 at €709M and June 19, 2026 at €463M) attracted no buyers. The state (Exim Banca Românească + ANAF) holds ~€400M in guaranteed claims.
