Complexul Energetic Oltenia (CEO), Romania's largest coal-based energy producer, is implementing mass layoffs as part of a restructuring and decarbonization plan. Approximately 1,400 employees with fixed-term contracts were laid off on April 1, 2026, followed by 300 more on May 1, 2026. An additional ~400 layoffs are projected by end of 2026. Employees did not receive compensatory salaries as labor law does not mandate this for fixed-term contract expiry. The company ended 2025 with ~1 billion lei loss; CO₂ certificate costs exceeded 2 billion lei. ~600 former employees filed for unemployment in Gorj County. AJOFM Gorj organized job fairs to assist affected workers.
